Musical Offering
Description:
The Musical Offering theme begins with a notation of five notes and then echoed by another five in the play of hands.
The fundamental creative principle is symmetry when the viewer experiences the relationship of each part to a whole. The initial geometric shape is reflected between two mirrored surfaces set at significant angles, which is exploited in many ways like a kaleidoscope. This portfolio's intrinsic underlying symbolism represents the pentagon, in a five fold division of a circle in a pointed star as the gold hand with the positioning of the arc and the figure of man in the act of offering and receiving.
However, it modulates and finishes one whole tone higher than it started out at. It thus has no final cadence. Marissen sees an incongruity between the official dedication to Frederick the Great and the effect of the music, which is often melancholy, even mournful.
Powerful imagery, powerful spirit. One can see feel the spirit in the palette. The colors are from the vibration of the artist’s soul.
